I prefer to use Abu 6500's for Pompano fishing since they can be easily modified for distance casting. The chrome reel was converted to a CT (non level wind) by removing the original level wind cage and replacing it with an OEM CT cage (which are difficult to come by). The handle was replaced with a power handle and the spool bearings were upgraded to the faster ABEC 7. The orange reel is a stock MAG CT with only the bearings being upgraded and brake blocks removed since I find the mag control to do adequate breaking in most conditions. The bronze reel is a Heritage 6500 CS (level wind) that is all stock. It was aquired directly from an Abu dealer in Sweden. All of these reels are difficult to find in the U.S. since they are manufactured for the European market. Each reel holds 250 yds of 14# test line. When matched with an 11-12.5' I can reach 160-180 yds. putting me on the bar where the Pompano play.

I like your reels...I have the same interest in the Abu's....I have the 6500CT Mag with the upgrades,,a tricked out Record and a 6600C4 with the drag upgrade...
Those are great reels for Pompano.
Hey nice site, I was wondering why do prefur casting reels over spinning, as I have been using penn SS series for 20 yrs and get pretty good distance. Not knockin' casting reels, I just never made the transition.
I use a shorty 10' matched with a penn 6500ss for inside the break and a pair of 12' matched w/ penn 9500ss for distance casting.
Manual bail mods in store for both the 9500ss this season.
I started surf fishing using Pennn 7500 Ss spinners. They hold up well and can get some distance, but I found that the abu 6500s were easy to maintain and modify. They also give me much more distance than a spinning reel.
