I am looking at getting the sur1385f...your thoughts

I believe the 1385 is actually the newer version of this same blank rated 2-6 ,I think. They increased the butt and tip on their blanks and the 1386 is now rated 4-8. The 1385 is closer to this same blank.

How do you like the 1386f? I am going to be throwing 4-5oz at the most for reds and stripers...How is the action on it? It is rated mod-fast...

Kevin, The 1386 is my favorite rod for Pompano, I like to use 4 but will go to 5oz if the current calls for it. The action is Mod-Fast leaning more toward fast. If you are going to toss metals with it it should work very well for stripers. The newer version (1385) looks like the same rod with a bit wider butt and tip and is rated 2-6.

Ok.....I have mine on the way to Bishop's in York Town Va...One of the distributers...He is also doing the build...I can see the 4oz.working for me as long as the current isn't running too hard...I have a Record 60HC with the C5 level wind and dearing upgrade that is fasssst...I'm debating on whether to put my 6500CT Mag Hi-speed on the 1385 or my record...

Up to a point, is it correct the longer the rod, the longer it will cast?

There must be an optimum maximum casting weight. In other words the weight that will cast furthest. For instance in ultra-light fishing, no matter what line and rod you use, it is difficult to cast 1/16 oz beyond 25 yards.

The moment that you increase weight, you increase distance. My question is, what is the weight in surf casting that will result in the longest cast?

You have a good question. I will try and answer for you.
You do not increase distance just by adding weight, you will increase distance by finding the "sweet spot" for a given rod rating. Rods are rated by how they load under force. Under normal a normal load the rod will perform best at somewhere between the rod rating. For example a rod rated 2-5 oz may perform best at 4oz, or even 2oz. Each rod blank is different. From a marketing standpoint many rod blank manufacturers will "widen" the rod rating to make it appear as one-do-all rod. This is misleading. Higher end Blank Mfrs. build the blank to precise standards which "narrow" ratings. A rod rated 8- 12 oz will not cast further than a rod rated 3-5 unless you are superman. Rod length, reel type, line and casting ability all play a part in the end result. Every well made rod has it's own personality.

I see...My 1385f comes in tomorrow morning and I will pick it up next week sometime...I will go with the 6500CT Mag Hi-Speed on that...I will then look at another Rainshadow for my Record 60 RNHC....If everthing goes as I think it will with the 1385 I may get another one..

Hooked?? no pun intended. Glad to see you are happy with it. I see a lot of money shoveled out for rods that pale in comparison.

If you really want to get hooked, try the Daiwa Saltiga Ballistic 33 with the Abu 6500 HS Mag. I have 2 of those and it'll cast amazingly far without using much energy. Yes, there are stiffer heavers that'll go farther but you'll be tired casting it all day. Not the case with the Ballistic 33. Love the Rainshadows though, great rod. Congrats on your purchase Kevin.
